Lussmanns returns to the capital after two decades

Hertfordshire operator Lussmanns has returned to London for the first time in two decades with a new site in Highgate.

More than twenty years since opening a site in Kensington, the sustainable restaurant group which has been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, is set to return to the capital.

The 130-cover restaurant on Highgate High Street, follows sites in St Albans, Hitchin, Harpenden, Berkhamsted and Hertford, with another restaurant in Womburn in Bedfordshire also planned.

Drinks

A bar will serve Mad Squirrel beer, which is brewed in Hertfordshire, and Lussmann’s gin, which is made using botanicals from the restaurant group’s garden.

Alongside the bar will be a 30-seater outdoor walled garden space as well as the main restaurant.

The group’s wine list aims to have a “minimal impact on the environment” with spirits offered from from artisan producers.

Its list includes traditional regions and varieties, such as a Languedoc Sauvignon Blanc and a Fleurie from Beaujolais, and a Gavi di Gavi and Primitivo from Italy, alongside bottles from other regions, including a Romanian Pinot Grigio and a Syrah from Peru.

Food

The operator describes its menus as a “celebration of the finest ingredients grown, reared, caught or produced here in the UK” and offers dishes which change with seasonal availability. 95% of its fruit and vegetables are sourced from the UK.

Meat is either organic or sustainably sourced, with dishes such as woodland-reared Sussex ham hock terrine, Cornish sole, Label Anglais free-range chicken and Stewed Yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake.

Coming home

Managing director Andrei Lussmann said that opening a restaurant in London felt “like we’re coming home” as the business began in Kensington in 2022.

He said that the operator couldn’t wait to open its doors in the “historic and beautiful Highgate village” and welcome customers with “the finest ingredients sourced from farmers, fishers and producers all practising the highest standards – and at affordable prices.”
