Gluten-free nitro porter makes it into a can
Leith’s Campervan Brewery has revealed that its beer Extra Black has become the first gluten-free nitro porter to go into a widget can.
Speaking to the drinks business about where the porter is positioned within the beer sector, Campervan Brewery production manager Patrick Smith, said, “We’re big fans of [Anspach & Hobday’s] London Black, and of course, the classic pint of Guinness, [owned by Diageo] but neither of these nitro porters are gluten free.”
Smith told db: “We have made a commitment to making all of our beers as accessible as possible. Extra Black is an incredibly special beer – by making it gluten free, we’ve ensured everyone can enjoy our beers, but we haven’t compromised on quality and taste.”
Due to limited information and guidance surrounding nitro porters, the Campervan team completed several trials on how to “nitrogenate it, how to package it and how to ensure bars could dispense it”.
The brewery has also stated that it is now invested in “more accurate lab equipment to ensure they can offer a high quality, consistent product” and pointed out that “the addition of a liquid nitrogen doser on the canning line and the widget can ensures a perfect pour every time, with a velvety head and balanced carbonation”.
Describing the beer, Smith added: “Extra Black is a full-bodied porter, with a dense cream-coloured head, featuring small and tight nitrogen bubbles. In the aroma, dark chocolate, cold-brew coffee and milk chocolate digestives combine, thanks to a combination of six malts. Extra Black is a smooth beer, with an aftertaste of dark chocolate and biscuity malt.”
Campervan Brewery’s core range is entirely gluten free and the new beer will be available alongside the rest of the portfolio via the brewery’s webshop.
Campervan Brewery recently re-opened its family-friendly taproom after an extensive renovation and expansion. The brewery was established in 2017, but at the beginning of 2024 it underwent an expansion that involved new equipment and increased its capacity by 50%.
