Does this Italian town sell the world’s cheapest beer?

Italy, Germany and Spain are some of the cheapest countries in the entire world to buy a bottle of beer, according to a new study.

The report by Magnet Kitchens using data from Numbeo, claims that the EU countries pipped the UK, US, Australia and Canada to the post for the cheapest brews, according to an analysis of 190 cities across the world.

There were ten cities where the cost of a beer was less than 75p.

These include:

  1. Taranto, Italy: £0.65
  2. Wuppertal, Germany: £0.71
  3. Dresden, Germany: £0.71
  4. Bochum, Germany: £0.71
  5. Zaragoza, Spain: £0.72
  6. Nuremberg, Germany: £0.73
  7. Bielefield, Germany: £0.73
  8. Bremen, Germany: £0.73
  9. Wandsbek, Germany: £0.74

Beer in Taranto in the region of Puglia in Italy was 11.5 times cheaper than the world’s most expensive bottle of beer, which the study claimed could be found in Darwin, Australia, and was £7.48.

The town was also top of the list for the cheapest bottle of wine, coming in seventh with a price of £3.87 per bottle, although it was beaten by another Italian city, Rome, where an average bottle was just £2.80.

Unfortunately for the UK, the country performed poorly, with the highest-ranking British city being Nottingham in 99th place and costing £1.63.

The most expensive German city was Berlin, where beer costs an average of £0.89. Germany has considerably low taxes on beer compared to other EU countries, which is why so many cities can be found in the top 50.

Overall, 20 cities from the country made the top 50, indicating it as a top place to take a trip to enjoy a brew. It also performed highly for wine, with eight German cities making the top 30 list for the cheapest bottle, including Bochum, where a bottle was just £4.29.

Alongside Zaragoza, some 18 Spanish cities ranked in the top 50, with the second cheapest being Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria, which came just outside the global top ten with a bottle of beer costing just £0.77.

The most expensive Spanish city to Cordoba, where a bottle of beer costs £1.57.
