Hans Astrom steps down as Klein Constantia vice chair

Klein Constantia has announced that Hans Astrom, vice chairman and former managing director, will be stepping down at the end of September after 12 years with the estate.

CEO Pascal Asin paid tribute to Astrom, stating: “With 12 years at Klein Constantia and over 30 years in the wine industry, Hans’s departure marks the end of an era for the vineyard. He’s played a vital role in building the Klein Constantia brand and will continue to be a respected figure in the industry.”

Dating back to 1685, the winery sits on the upper foothills of Constantiaberg. Last September the South African producer launched its Vin de Constance 2020 on French platform La Place de Bordeaux at £564 per case of 12 (50cl), a 4% raise on last year’s price.

Swedish-born Astrom will maintain a place on the board, and will continue contributing his expertise to premium brands across the industry, the company said in a statement on his departure.

Having studied economics, Astrom was voted Sweden’s best sommelier in 1986. His previous experience also includes working as director and vice president of sales for Peter Lehmann Wines, before he assumed the role of general manager for Hess Family Estates.

Reflecting on his tenure at Klein Constantia, he said: “Klein Constantia is more than a winery; it’s a family bonded by a shared passion for excellence. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved over the past decade, which has cemented Klein Constantia’s reputation for quality and heritage around the world.”
