Big three UK supermarkets slash price of Champagne

With Champagne prices rising this year, and further increases coming after the price-per-kilo for the 2022 harvest reached a record high, UK grocers are unlikely to discount fizz prices as aggressively past. But this weekend Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrison’s are all running 25% off deals with prices falling attractively on some lines.

At Sainsbury’s, the 25% off purchase of six bottles or more which runs until Monday (3 July) sees the already discounted prices on Lanson Le Rosé and Le Black Label Brut NV drop to £26.25 and £23.25. Bollinger Special Cuvée is also available at £36 a bottle in the deal, and it is worth noting the standard price of this wine has now risen to £55 – a higher price than Bollinger’s Rosé was in 2022.

Vintage champagne continues to offer the best value in the market, with Sainsbury’s new offering Charles Dauteuil — from the well-thought 2014 vintage – a good buy under the deal, falling from £25 to £18.75 a bottle. This very moreish, approachable 50:50 Pinot/Chardonnay blend comes from a co-op based in Serzy et Prin, in the Ardre Valley, and has decent intensity and hint of spiciness.

In you want a well-known vintage brand, Lanson’s high quality 2012 vintage – the first and most lauded of the trilogy – drops from £48 to £36 under the deal. Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2013 – the middle vintage of the trio and the one with extra zip and freshness that many admire – has shot up in price to £62 recently, but can be bought for £46.50 under the offer.

Over at Tesco, you need to have a club card to enjoy the 25% discount and a single price discount is offered only on Lanson Le Black Label Brut NV, Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial and Heidsieck Dry Monopole. The Champagnes have club card prices of £31, £34 and £24 respectively and drop to £23.25, £25.50 and £18 respectively with the 25% six-bottle discount

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2013 is cheaper at Tesco than at Sainsbury’s, discounted to £36.75, while Lanson 2012 is discounted to £41, which is £5 higher than Sainsbury’s deal.

The standard price for a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label has now shot up to £48, but it is worth considering how much customers are paying for at Lords Cricket Ground over the past few days, as they watch England in the second test.

Morrisons’s offers a 25% discount on three bottles of champagne. It’s The Best Premier Cru drops from £27 a bottle to £20.25 while it’s the Best Etienne Leclair Rose falls from £24 to £18, but I can’t vouch for the quality of either of these as I have not tasted them.

The other champagnes discounted at the moment, but not in the “25% off three” deal are Lanson Le Rosé and Le Black Label Brut NV: down £11 each to £31 and £35 a bottle respectively, neatly matching the Sainsbury’s single bottle prices.
