Tesco to launch value wine
Tesco Value wine is expected to hit shelves by the end of the year, the retailer has confirmed. The range, which is currently in development, is a direct response to current economic pressures and a perceived consumer demand for wine at lower price points.
It has been speculated that this range could retail for as little as £2.99 per bottle, which has drawn criticism of the retailer, given current concerns about supermarket pricing of alcohol and its impact on binge drinking. Alcohol Focus Scotland, a charity concerned with harm caused by alcohol, has been one of the most vocal.
Chief executive Jack Law commented: “Alcohol isn’t an ordinary product like bread.” He added that “alcohol should only ever be promoted on the basis of taste and quality, not price.”
“Just because a customer is not paying £6 does not mean they don’t deserve a quality wine,” reasoned Tesco’s BWS director Dan Jago.
