Beam Distilling launches private barrel club

The popularity of single-barrel bottlings has exploded over the past decade, driven by whiskey enthusiasts seeking more personal and exclusive experiences.

In response, major producers have embraced the trend, offering limited, customisable options to clubs, retailers and now, individuals. The James B Beam Distilling Co, one of the most prominent names in American whiskey, is joining the ranks with its newly launched Beam Private Barrel Club.

Starting in early 2025, consumers will have the chance to purchase personalised single barrels of Knob Creek Bourbon and Rye directly from the distillery. Previously reserved for retail and trade buyers, Beam’s programme invites private customers to participate in an immersive barrel selection experience at its Clermont, Kentucky campus.

A hands-on experience

The process begins with prospective buyers joining the Beam Private Barrel Club and requesting a booking. After scheduling with a Beam Legacy Ambassador, participants can bring along a group of up to eight people for the selection day.

The experience includes a guided tour of the James B. Beam Distilling Co Campus, followed by a trip to the rackhouse, where they’ll taste through a selection of single barrels and choose one to bottle.

Once a barrel is selected, it’s bottled under a personalised label for the buyer. Bottling typically takes 90 to 120 days, and the purchaser is responsible for collecting and paying for the entire barrel, which yields between 100 and 175 bottles, depending on evaporation losses. Prices start at approximately US$60 per bottle.

Commitments and customisation

The programme requires an upfront, non-refundable deposit of US$1,000 to secure a booking. This deposit is applied to the final cost of the barrel. While Knob Creek Bourbon and Rye are currently bottled at 120 proof and 115 proof, respectively, it remains unclear whether future options will allow for adjustments in proof or cask strength bottling.

For now, the programme focuses exclusively on Knob Creek, but there’s potential for the inclusion of other Beam brands in the future.
