German-born Anne Krebiehl MW has been hired by Qatar Airways to ensure that the airline is able to secure “highly sought-after wines for First and Business Class passengers”, said the company. Krebiehl will also work with wineries to develop unique blends that “perform well at 40,000 feet”, and will train cabin crew to communicate about these wines to those drinking them.

Sustainable packaging will be a key determining factor in the wines that Krebiehl chooses for the airline.

The MW, whose specialisms are Pinot Noir, Riesling and traditional method sparkling wines, will collaborate closely with Qatar Airways’ culinary team to pair wines with onboard dining options, which change once per quarter in order to incorporate seasonal ingredients and “maintain excitement among frequent fliers.”

According to Qatar Airways, part of Krebiehl’s role will involve blind-tasting more than 1,000 wines from around the world each year in a bid to ensure “a varied and unique onboard selection”.

Four million glasses of Champagne

Each year Qatar Airways serves around four million glasses of Champagne, 1.4 million bottles of red wine, and 200,000 servings of caviar onboard its flights.

“Qatar Airways is excited to welcome Anne Krebiehl to our award-winning team as Master of Wine,” said Xia Cai, senior vice president, product development, for Qatar Airways.

“Her deep industry knowledge is crucial to the success of Qatar Airways’ wine programme, which in turn is fundamental to our commitment to consistently providing an unforgettable, world-class travel experience on each flight. Ms Krebiehl is at the forefront of the wine industry, and will be able to bring her forward-thinking knowledge and sourcing expertise to our airline to ensure we continue to remain the world’s best.”

Speaking about her appointment, Krebiehl said she believes that great wine and food are “key to enjoying life”.

“Qatar Airways’ wine programme is a testament to its customer-centric approach,” she added. “I am looking forward to using my expertise to contribute to offering the best possible customer experience onboard, helping to boost Qatar Airways’ customer satisfaction and loyalty.”
