Douglas Laing blends Scotch and Indian whiskies in new bottling
Independent bottler Douglas Laing has launched its latest project — a blend of Scottish and Indian single malts — under its Double Barrel brand. Eloise Feilden finds out more.
The Glasgow-based bottler has launched its first ever blend combining single malts from India and Scotland to create a new unique blended malt whisky called Double Barrel India & Scotland.
Managing director Cara Laing told db the project has been in the works for two years. She said the Douglas Laing team has been “essentially waiting until we feel the whiskies are at their optimum point and ready to be carefully married together”.
When asked how the Indian casks were sourced and collected, Laing said: “We selected to taste a number of Indian single casks from various partners within the wider whisky community and felt these particular casks from the Highland region of India were exactly what we were looking for.”
The blended whisky, which has been bottled at 50% ABV, has been launched as part of the bottler’s Double Barrel brand. Other expressions in the range include a Speyside and Lowland blend, an Islay and Highland blend and Bowmore and Blair Athol 10-year-old combining liquid from the two famed Scotch distilleries.
Four casks were selected — two Scottish and two Indian — as part of the blend, which has undergone no colouring or chill-filtration. Chloe Wood, brand manager for Douglas Laing, said that samples from each cask were trialled to “ensure the flavour profile is what we would expect once blended”.
She added: “Once the blend has been selected, the four chosen casks are married together and left to rest before bottling. As this is a combination of Indian and Scottish Single Malt, the blending and bottling took place in Wales.”
Douglas Laing is launching 2,000 bottles of the Double Barrel India & Scotland across Europe and Asia, with scope to be released to the US.
It carries a suggested retail price of £75.00/€89.00.
