Hundred Acre Wine Group expands Napa footprint

St Helena-based Hundred Acre Wine Group has announced the acquisition of Kelly Fleming Winery in Simmons Canyon.

The 286 acre (116 hectare) estate located between St Helena and Calistoga includes 12 acres (5ha) of vineyards, planted largely with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, located close to Hundred Acre’s estate which, in spite of the name, is a 115 acre (47ha) property, 5 acres (2ha) of which are under vine.

Kelly Fleming herself, who hails from Oregon, purchased the estate in 1998, overseeing the development of the vineyard, as well as the construction of its cave and winery.

According to Jayson Woodbridge, founder and owner of Hundred Acre Wine Group, the buildings were a major draw: “Kelly smartly and very tastefully used Taylor Lombardo Architects to design her cave, winery and hilltop residence.”

“So too, Hundred Acre is also busy using Taylor Lombardo to redesign our ARK vineyard residence, the Fortunate Son Winery at the Historic David Fulton Ranch on Fulton Lane, St Helena, the redesign of the former Madrigal winery and residence to a new Fortunate Son Winery on Highway 29, near Larkmead Lane and other projects,” he continued. “It’s a perfect fit for Hundred Acre. We are proud and privileged to have acquired this property we have long admired, from Kelly.”

Fleming commented that she had “left this estate vineyard as beautiful” as she had found it. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

There are also plans to permit guests to come to the property from spring next year, though by invitation only.

The acquisition of the Madrigal winery by Hundred Acre Wine Group was announced in July, with the plan for it to produce wines for Woodbridge’s newly-launched Fortunate Son brand.

At the time of that deal, Woodbridge said: “I watched the vineyard at Larkmead Lane corner for 30 years. I have been seriously looking at Madrigal for several years.”

He also claimed that “this type of opportunity only comes along for vineyards of this quality perhaps every 75 – 100 years”.
