The winner of Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year 2024
A dramatic, birds-eye image of the harvest in Burgundy has won the prize of Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year 2024.
The award-winning photograph (above), which forms part of the Pink Lady Photographer of the Year Awards for food photography and film, was for the Places sub-category.
Shot in the village of Volnay in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy, renowned for its Pinot Noir wines, Gaudillère used natural light to capture the intensity and energy of the harvest, which all of the key players – the horse, the tractor and the pickers – presented in a tableau scene of shadows on the dust track.
The awards were announced last night (4 June) at the Mall Galleries, where there is a free exhibition of the photographs and film of the finalists. A global judging panel, chaired by food photographer, David Loftus, assessed the images.
The People sub-category was won by another Frenchman, Jonathan Thevenet, for Les Liens du Vin, which was also captured in Burgundy at the Aegerter estate. This image shows the family involved in the harvest.
A French photographer, Guenhaël Kessler, also won the Produce sub-category for his picture In the Tank During Alcoholic Fermentation, which was an almost abstract close-up of the vivid colours of fermentation, captured for renowned oenologist, Xavier Vignon, in the Rhone Valley, France.
Joanna Simon, wine writer and member of the judging panel for Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year, said the quality of the images was “outstanding” and she loved the way the “three category winners evoke the conviviality and excitement of grape picking and the sheer beauty and colour of winemaking”.
She added: “The two vineyard photographs both show the harvest in action and yet they couldn’t be more different – different people, places and times of the day captured for all time from very different viewpoints.”
CEO of APAL, Phil Turnbull, who owns sponsor of the awards Pink Lady, said the competition “continues to tell important food stories from across the globe.”
He said: “Despite the challenges of an ever-changing world, we never cease in growing, gathering, cooking, eating and celebrating with food. Each year, the remarkable photographs serve as a reminder of the fundamental role of food in every culture and every people around the world.”
