Adam Handling to open new pub in Cornwall

Chef Adam Handling, best known as the restaurateur behind Frog in Covent Garden, has announced that he will open a second Cornish establishment.

Called The Tartan Fox, a nod to Handling’s Scottishness, the pub will be located between Newquay and Truro in a 400-year-old Grade II-listed building.

It follows cocktail bar Ugly Butterfly, which Handling opened in St. Ives in 2021.

The food at The Tartan Fox, which is due to open early next month, will be similar to that of Handling’s first pub, The Loch & the Tyne in Old Windsor, with an emphasis on pub classics, though made using Cornish produce. The pub can seat 90 across its two floors.

According to a press release, refurbishment of the historic building, previously known as Carvynick House, has already taken place ahead of its opening, with further renovations expected to take place over the coming year.

“I’ve always loved Cornwall so, when this opportunity came up, it was one I just couldn’t refuse,” said Handling.

“The pub is completely stunning, steeped in history, set in the Cornish countryside with so much land. Cornwall is one of the most beautiful places in Britain and it produces some incredible ingredients. It’s amazing to have the chance to combine the history of this stunning building with sustainable British food, made from local Cornish ingredients. You might not know you’re in an Adam Handling restaurant when you walk in but you’ll know it by the time you walk out.”

He then suggested that people “fly into Newquay” to visit The Tartan Fox and Ugly Butterfly.

Details of the drinks are yet to be disclosed, though it is understood that cocktails, local beers, and British wines will be available.
