The Tamworth Tap retains title as CAMRA’s Pub of the Year
The Tamworth Tap in Staffordshire has been named as the best pub in the UK by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for the second year in a row.
The brewpub, run by George and Louise Greenaway, won the title for the first time last year, and was singled out both for its beer selection and its place in the community.
Faced with finalists from Kent, Yorkshire and the Isle of Man, the West Midlands boozer has once again been named best in the UK by CAMRA.
CAMRA awards director Laura Emson said: “The Tamworth Tap should be incredibly proud of this feat, to be named the best pub in the UK two times on the trot is a remarkable achievement. The pub encapsulates everything that CAMRA aims to promote and protect, and each member of the team deserves the recognition twice over.”
Of course, CAMRA’s key aim is the promotion of real ale, and The Tamworth Tap has eight hand pulls, with beer from Tamworth Brewing Company (which operates within the pub) joined by a roster of others from elsewhere. With regards to the all-important community aspect, the pub was commended for its comedy nights (‘Barrel of Laughs’), live music (‘Sunday Session’), and annual wassail.
The Greenaways reacted to the news of their second win: “Words really can’t express how we feel right now. It took a while for the magnitude of the occasion to sink in when we won last year; to have retained it is beyond incredible! We vowed to continue to evolve, with the aim of providing the ultimate drinking experience to everyone who walks through our door.”
“We aren’t just a pub; we are a hub of the community, and we aim to bring people together. That and the perfect pint is what it’s all about,” they added.
