Bob Dylan sells Highlands estate for £4.2m to whisky firm

Musician and drinks brand owner Bob Dylan has sold his Highland estate to a family-owned whisky firm for more than £4.2m.

He originally put Aultmore House, which is located in the Cairngorm National Park, on the market over the summer for offers of more than £3m.

Dylan bought the property with his brother, David Zimmerman, in 2006 and according to the property agent, Knight Frank, would often visit the estate for several weeks each summer.

Built during the First World War between 1911 and 1915, the Aultmore estate was used as a holiday home for the son of a Scottish merchant, before coming under Dylan’s ownership. The vast house includes 11 bathrooms and four reception rooms, which include, of course, a music room, as well as a greenhouse, a walled garden and a croquet lawn.

In addition, the estate has a number of other properties, including three four-bedroom cottages, which are currently being advertised for rental at £900 a week.

Legal documents now show that the Grade A-listed property was purchased by Angus Dundee Distillers, which was founded by Terence Hillman and is currently London-based and controlled by his children Tania and Aaron.

The firm currently has two distilleries, purchasing the Tomintoul Distillery in 2000 from Whyte & Mackay, and then Glencadam in 2003. Tomintoul on Speyside is run by fourth generation master distiller Robert Fleming, who produce a range of single malt Scotch whiskies. Brechin-based Glencadam was formerly owned by Allied and run under the Ballantine’s umbrella until being closed in 2000 before Angus Dundee purchased it in 2003.

Under the firm’s ownership, it has re-invigorated the range with a 10 year old, 15 year old and even a recently-released 30 year old whisky. The company also produces Old Ballantruan whisky and a rum and gin range.

Dylan also co-owns his own American whisky brand, Heaven’s Door, which recently announced a brand new, 160 acre distillery based in Kentucky USA, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dylan’s seminal song that inspired the brand, ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ – originally released in 1973.
