Charity sale of Burgundian wines raises €700,000 for young musicians

A charity wine auction held at the Château du Clos de Vougeot as part of its annual music and wine festival, has raised a total of almost €700,000.

The auction of the 15th annual edition of the festival took place on 2 July at the Grand Cellier at the Clos de Vougeot, during a gala dinner, with eleven wines from prestigious domaines in Burgundy offered for sale raising a total of €286,400.  In addition, there was a complimentary online auction comprising 54 lots of wines from across Burgundy and Champagne, among others, which more than doubled its pre-sale estimate, to bring the overall total to just under €700,000.

Among the highlights of the sale was a jeroboam of Romanée-Saint-Vivant 2010, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which sold for €70,200; a three-magnum offering of Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvée Madeleine Collignon 2019, Hospices de Beaune, aged by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which sold for €48,600; and three magnums of Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Cuvée Roi Soleil 2022, Hospices de Beaune, aged by Domaine Leflaive, which sold for €48,600.

The proceeds from the sale, which was conducted by Sotheby’s, will go to the Fonds Instrumental, which provides young and talented classical musicians with access to quality musical instruments.

The Fonds Instrumental has been entirely financed by the auction since it was started, with instruments crafted by  luthiers who pay homage to the Burgundian vineyards that contribute to the sale, by making stringed instruments bearing the name of each of the Grands Crus on offer – as well as a vintage label, “Music & Wine at Clos Vougeot”.

Amayès Aouli, Sotheby’s head of wine, Europe, said it had been an honour for Sotheby’s Wine to host the two auctions and support such a great cause on an international stage and thanked those involved.  “The wonderfully unique idea of having several lots of Hospices de Beaune Grand Cru Cuvées aged by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti for the Red Wine and Domaine Leflaive for the White Wine was a very symbolic offering for this special charity sale – reflected by the exceptional prices achieved for these iconic cuvées,” he said.

The festival, now in its 15th year, was established by Aubert de Villaine, Bernard Hervet, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Faiveley.
