Suntory launches water education project in Beijing

Suntory Holdings China and leading importer ASC Fine Wines have launched a “next-gen” environmental programme in Beijing to teach kids the importance of water.

A water education project initiated by Japanese drinks giant Suntory Group has been extended to include China, with the help of one of the market’s leading fine wine distributors.

The inaugural ceremony took place in Beijing on 7 March, launching the Suntory Mizuiku programme with a selection of partner schools in the city.

Officials from Beijing’s Sustainable Education Development Association, and Shanghai Voluntary Service Foundation also participated in the opening ceremony for the project, the aim of which is to teach children about the importance of water.

Suntory Mizuiku is designed for the next generation to realise the beauty of nature and the importance of water, as well as the forests that nurture groundwater. Its objective is to encourage children to think about what they can do to ensure there is enough water in the future.

The education project began in Japan in 2004, and has since been rolled out globally to France, Spain, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and now China, beginning with Shanghai in 2021.

So far, the project has been introduced to 70 primary schools in Shanghai and has reached more than 20,000 pupils there. Suntory has high hopes that the same scale will be achieved in Beijing.

The name of the Suntory Mizuiku programme comes from the Japanese phrase “Mizu To Ikiru”, which mean “Living with Water, and sums up Suntory’s promise to its shareholders.

ASC Fine Wines joined the sustainability initiative in 2022. With more than 1,200 premium wine labels from around the world, ASC’s luxury portfolio has made it one of the most trustworthy sources of fine wine in China.

The Suntory Group has promoted various wide-reaching water initiatives in the past, including activities to preserve and restore nature, based on the group’s Sustainable Water Philosophy.

As a global company with an annual revenue of $19.8 billion, The Suntory Group is committed to creating harmony with people and nature.
