Beijing’s famous Sanlitun Bar Street closed for major refurb

The iconic drinking hub in Beijing is about to undergo a major renovation project aimed at improving its safety and overall quality.

The most famous bar street in Beijing, which was once a bustling hub of activity in the 1990s that represented the city’s thriving night time economy, has fallen behind in terms of development and safety in recent years.

According to officials from Sanlitun Sub-district Office, a comprehensive appraisal revealed the need for clearing and “anti-seismic” reinforcement to ensure the safety of the area against natural disasters. As a result, merchants on Bar Street were evacuated for the renovation project to begin.

As reported by Xinhuanet news agency, the Beijing Sanlitun renewal project officially began on 8 February. The project is expected to take three months and will see Sanlitun Road being upgraded into a “slow street”. The slow-moving street block will create a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood, which spans Chaoyang North Road to the banks of Liangma River.

With the total length of Sanlitun Road and South Sanlitun Road being 2.5 km, it connects several landmark destinations, including the embassy area, commercial area, residential area, Sanlitun Taikoo Li, Sanlitun Bar Street, Sanlitun SOHO, and more.

According to Chaoyang District Urban Management Committee, the Sanlitun business district will undergo an overall “environmental update”, which will integrate commercial consumption, international exchanges, life, and leisure, improving the quality of the business district.

The project will carry out the reconstruction and upgrade to slow-moving roads on both Sanlitun Road and South Sanlitun Road, as well as the public areas on both sides of the road, widening the width of the traffic lane and increasing environmental greening.

While the district is being upgraded, the commercial facilities will also be improved. The area will see the opening of highly sought-after outdoor coffee shops, and more flagship stores and new brands will be introduced to enrich the commercial district.

With the completion of this facelift, the major commercial business district in Beijing is expected to take on a more refined and international feel, drawing visitors from across the globe to drink in its bars.
