All the wines served at President Biden’s state dinner with Emmanuel Macron

When U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte yesterday evening at the White House in Washington, D.C., three California wines were featured on the menu – but all with French connections.

Here are all the wines served at President Biden’s state dinner with Emmanuel Macron:

      • – Roederer Estate Brut Rosé NV – produced in chilly Mendocino County by the French Champagne house that began making wine there in 1988.
      • – Newton Unfiltered Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018 – owned by French luxury firm LMVH and whose winery and much of its cellar were destroyed by wildfires in 2020.
      • – Anakota Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 – owned by Jackson Family Wines but crafted by the Jacksons’ friend and business partner, Bordeaux winemaker Pierre Seillan.

The wines were served in Baccarat crystal.

The menu itself featured Maine lobster with American caviar followed by calotte of beef with shallot marmalade. The dinner was finished by a course of American cheeses and orange chiffon cake with accompaniments.

The guests list for the Bidens’ first state dinner was also sparkling – John Legende and Chrissie Teigen, Anna Wintour and Baz Luhrmann, Stephen Colbert, Claude Lelouch, Christian Laboutin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jennifer Gardner – but it also included a major wine dignitary – LVMH owner Bernard Arnault and Hélène Marie Mercier Arnault – as well as Bouchaine winery owners Tatiana Copeland and Gerret Copeland.

Both men decided to put on hold their considerable political differences and instead emphasised their professed bro-like friendship as flattery filled the nighttime air. Macron called the American President “cher Joe,” and Biden in turn said the first state dinner of his presidency was reserved for Macron “because he is my friend.”

This being Washington on a weekday evening, there were no reports of official after-parties.
