Prosecco DOC exports to the US soar with the help of Prosecco rosé

The Prosecco DOC enjoyed a surge in both volume and sales value exports to the United States in 2021, ably abetted by the increasing popularity of Prosecco rosé, new data has revealed.

According to research carried out by Nomisma, the value of sparkling wines imported to the US hit US$519 million – a 19.1% increase on pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019.

And the Prosecco DOC enjoyed particular success in the US, seeing its exports by volume rise to 25.5 million gallons – an increase of 44.3% on 2020 and 40.3% on 2019. The total export volume of Prosecco in 2019 was 17.6 million gallons.

The research identifies Prosecco rosé as a key driver of the wider DOC’s growth in 2021, with 71.5 million bottles produced last year.

As a whole, Italy was the second-largest exporter of sparkling wines, with a total export value of more than US$1.8 million. Of that overall sum, Prosecco accounted for US$1.3 million, representing a growth in value of 26% in comparison to 2019.

By state, California was the biggest export market by value for Italian sparkling wine in 2021 at US$79 million, followed by Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, New Jersey and New York.
