Christie’s HK wine sale achieves historical records
Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Auctions ended on a high note with one of the single-owner collections breaking the historic total sales record at HK$131,898,875.
According to the auction house, the sale ‘The Visionary’s Spectacular Cellar’ has achieved the highest ever total for the category and most valuable single-owner wine collection ever sold at Christie’s globally.
The three-day live sales event, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, presented 820 lots of the greatest wines from celebrated producers, including: DRC, Bordeaux First Growths, Petrus, Le Pin, Cheval Blanc, Burgundy and Henri Jayer.
Running for 11-hours, the sale saw participants from 11 countries across three continents, with almost 40% of lots sold via Christie’s online bidding platform.

This season, we are very privileged to have convened distinguished wine collectors and enthusiasts worldwide in our Hong Kong saleroom physically and online, who not only recognise the breadth and depth of our vinous offerings but also the expertise and synergy of our specialist teams. Leading the sale was lot 5407 from ‘The Visionary’s Spectacular Cellar’ – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti 1999, 12 bottles per lot, sold for HK$3,000,000. Mature Bordeaux continued to fetch solid prices, especially large formats, for instances two Château Cheval-Blanc 1947 magnums was sold for HK$600,000 and 12 bottles of Petrus 1970 had realised HK$375,000. White Burgundy remained strong, as shown by three Domaine Leflaive, Montrachet 1996 magnums were hammered at HK$750,000. Rounding out the sale was a diverse selection of Champagne with highlights including 12 bottles of Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 1985 sold for HK$175,000.
Followed by ‘The Ultimate Private Collection Featuring The Greatest Burgundies Part II’ sale, which was held on 22-23 May, the sale featured 900 lots of top Burgundies, Bordeaux, and Champagne. The top lot of this sale and of the assortment was 12 bottles of Domaine Leroy, Chambertin 2009, sold for HK$1,062,500. Top Red Burgundy from Henri Jayer, Domaine Armand Rousseau and Domaine Méo-Camuzet saw fierce competition: 12 bottles of Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin 2005 realised HK$687,500, while 12 bottles of Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 1993 was sold for HK$812,500.
Part ll of the ‘The Visionary’s Spectacular Cellar’ will be offered in an online auction to be held until 8 June, bringing about 700 lots of fine and rare bottles from both esteemed and up-and-coming names, from DRC, Rousseau, Leroy, to Rossignol Trapet, Domaine de la Vougeraie, and Bruno Clavelier.
Proceeds from ‘The Visionary’s Spectacular Cellar’ sales will be donated to London Business School to support its commitment to deliver an impact on the way the world does business and the way business impacts the world.
