Bar owner says venue’s beer is priced to avoid ‘clientele we don’t want’
A bar owner said that he has deliberately set beer prices higher – and avoided stocking certain pints – to discourage groups of men on a drinking session from visiting his venue.
Carl Blake runs the Dovecot in Middlesborough, and says his pricing helps him avoid a rowdy crowd, with the cheapest pint costing £4.40 at his venue.
He also cited several beers that the venue does not stock in a recent interview, once again in a bid to avoid groups of men out on a drinking session.
Mr Blake is currently in the process of opening a summer house to extend his venue’s possibilities for the summer, but was once again at pains in the interview to highlight the fact that this did not mean he was encouraging a carnival, free-for-all atmosphere.
He said his venue was all about attracting a high-end customer, returning frequently to the the notion of the Dovecot being a premium venue.
Recently, a venue opening in Surrey, UK, came under fire after posting what many felt was a “sexist” dress code to its website.
Beluga Bar in Leatherhead was criticised for its dress code, which was described in a now-deleted post as:
“Dress code is smart casuals with jackets for men, no tracksuits, no t-shirt and women can wear skinny jeans with sexy black ankle-strap heels and with a form-fitting top.
“Alternatively, there are many different types of dresses that would look good at a bar in the summer or winter, namely a midi or bodycon dresses.”
