Coop boost rosé with new Provencal from Mirabeau
UK convenience retailer The Coop has added its range of rosé wines after seeing sales of 20% over the last year. The retailer has added a new Provence rosé from Maison Mirabeau, the first multiple high street retailer to stock it.
Wine buyer Ben Cahill said he was a “firm believer” that rosé was a wine suitable for year-round drinking rather than just being a summer drink. “We’re seeing our shoppers choose wines from across the whole category, including the entry level and also seeing some trading up to a more a premium bottle so the Mirabeau X is the perfect addition to our collection,” he said.
Mirabeau’s founder, Stephen Cronk, added that he was excited to be launching Mirabeau X in the Co-op. He described the this pale pink rosé from the north of Provence as a “great expression of this stunning Provence appellation”, with “lively aromas of red berries and clean and crisp palate”.
In the autumn, the convenience retailer refreshed the range, adding around 45 new wines.
“A good 10% of the range has been refreshed, with a a focus on organic, vegan and Fair-trade,” category manager Joe Turner told db at the time.
“There’s always an element of refreshing the range but we’ve specifically looked at organic and sustainable, so where wine can be vegan, it should be,” he added.
It also added five new Fairtrade wines to the range as part of its ongoing commitment to replace non-Fairtrade wines with a Fairtrade alternative.
In addition it added wines from South Africa to compensate for shortages in New Zealand – the country was becoming the go-to place for the UK, he said – and several new French lines.
“Stylistically South Africa is accessible at a good price point, and we have a longstanding history with the country, as we significantly over index in it through our Fairtrade commitment.
The team were also planning to boost its no and low range in 2022 .
“We don’t want to rush that – I think wine hasn’t done as good a job as beer and spirits, they have done better than wine, but that will come,” Turner added.
