Would you rather be drinking wine at a football match?
Majestic Wine has teamed up with Manchester City to become the football club’s official wine supplier. But would you rather be sipping vino goalside than enjoying a fresh pint? We asked our readers.
Wine retailer Majestic has unveiled its partnership with Manchester City, becoming the official wine supplier of Premier League club.
The move sees the national retailer become the supplier to the Etihad Stadium, as well as offering a number of experiences on matchdays and beyond.
The new agreement, in place from early 2022, will see Majestic colleagues providing tastings for the club’s hospitality guests – as well as providing wines to be stocked across the stadium through Majestic’s commercial arm.
Majestic’s chief commercial officer, Rob Cooke, said of the partnership: “We are delighted to be working with Manchester City to help raise the bar for wine in football. The Etihad already provides a superb matchday experience for fans, and we’re really looking forward to adding a new Majestic angle through our team of experts and award-winning range.”
Whilst traditionally fans would be more likely to opt for the half time pie and pint over a Pinot or Picpoul, the retailer has argued that wine is increasingly becoming popular amongst football fans.
We put this theory to the test, and reached out to db‘s Instagram followers to find out whether wine is for the win when it comes to sipping in the stands.
While 68% of voters said they would rather stick to a pint, almost a third (32%) of the 106 voters opted for a celebratory glass of wine at a football match.
Last December Majestic announced its decision to close its two Calais stores today (13 December), as changes to the duty-free alcohol allowance brought about by Brexit weigh on the economics of the business. Read more on that here.
