Authorities in Turkey were left utterly baffled after a man who had been reported missing joined his own search party, before eventually realising he was the missing person they were looking for.

Beyhan Mutlu had reportedly been drinking with friends in the neighbourhood of Çayyaka near the city of İnegöl. His pals became concerned, however, when he wandered off into local woodlands and didn’t come back.

The alarm was raised with police and rescue teams, who set about searching for the 50-year-old.

The search party soon swelled when local residents became aware of the presumed disappearance, and local media reports that people were calling out Beyhan Mutlu’s name when someone in the search party said: “Who are we looking for? I am here.”

Remarkably, the man had joined his own search party without realising, and the searchers realised that the man they were looking for had been with them all along.

Police later escorted the 50-year-old home, with a bizarre tale to tell and, presumably, an almost unbelievable-sounding police report to write up.
