Empty gin bottles clean up on eBay
Reselling your empty gin bottles on shopping website eBay could make you money, according to data analysts.
Analysts at Lifestyle Packaging collated the average eBay resale price for 120 empty gin bottles and compared this against each brand’s RRP to prove that not only is the trend for gin drinking alive and well, but so too is the desire to upcycle its packaging.
Most popular on the selling site is a bottle of Mermaid Pink Gin, distilled in the Isle of Wight, with its iconic textured blush-hued bottle. The strawberry flavoured gin, which retails at £38 has an average selling price on eBay of £11.98 for its empty bottle – netting sellers 31% cashback per bottle after listing fees.
In second place, the Diageo-owned Gordon’s London Dry Gin, which retails at £15.50 for 70cl, can bag eBay users an average 30% of its RRP back per bottle, securing £4.65 for sellers.
The Eden Mill Golf Gin comes in third place, selling on eBay for an average of £8.82 – 29% of its £30 retail price.
An empty bottle of Whitley Neill Blood Orange Gin (RRP £26) sells for an average of £7.11 – or 27% cashback – on the selling site.
The RRPs for the 120 gins studied were taken from large supermarket websites and excluded promotional offers. eBay’s Terapeak product research tool was used to identify the average sale price for each gin.
