This map shows how much every state taxes wine

Though you likely already consider a variety of factors when purchasing a bottle of wine and judging its relative value, a new study has revealed how much every state taxes wine – and one state is way out in front.

The Tax Foundation – a nonprofit tax policy group – has published a map that compares wine excise taxes across all 50 US states expressed in dollars per gallon of plonk.

According to The Tax Foundation’s research, states tend to tax wine at a higher rate than beer but lower that distilled spirits, likely due to wine sitting somewhere in the middle of the former and latter in terms of ABV.

Kentucky has by far the highest wine excise taxes at US$3.23 per gallon, whereas second placed Alaska is way back on $2.50 per gallon.

Meanwhile, the lowest wine excise taxes are to be found in California and Texas at $0.20 per gallon.

Meanwhile, separate research as revealed the most valuable wine and spirits brands for 2021.

Moët et Chandon held the top spot for the second consecutive year for the most valuable wine and Champagne brands, despite seeing an 11% drop in brand value. You can see the full list here.
