Tanqueray launches 0.0% ABV version to join growing alcohol-free sector

Diageo has signalled the expansion of its alcohol-free ‘spirits’ portfolio by announcing the launch of a 0.0% ABV version of Tanqueray.

Tanqueray alcohol-free spirit

Tanqueray described the alcohol-free ‘spirit’ as a “mindful drink option for those not willing to compromise on taste” in a press release. What’s more, the product has been created using the same botanicals that will be familiar to fans of Tanqueray London Dry gin. These include: piney juniper, peppery coriander, aromatic angelica and sweet liquorice.

“Our expert innovation team has combined years of expertise and historic Gin distilling knowledge to create a credible alcohol-free experience. As one of the bestselling premium gin brands in the world, we know that Tanqueray 0.0% is an experience that our fans will not want to miss. The liquid has a flavour that shines through in sophisticated cocktails and when mixed with classic tonic water, meaning you do not have to compromise on quality and taste if you choose not to consume alcohol,” Tanqueray Master Distiller, Terry Fraser said.

“Created by distilling the same botanicals used in Tanqueray London Dry Gin, the botanicals are individually immersed in water, heated and then distilled before being expertly blended together to capture the essence of Tanqueray in a delicious alcohol-free alternative. This special distillation process is a closely guarded secret, known only to a handful of people and we are incredibly proud to be bringing gin drinkers that juniper and citrus led taste they’re expecting from Tanqueray when they choose not to drink alcohol.”

Tanqueray 0.0% also offers drinkers with a low-calorie option for those who wish to moderate their intake, with just 6kcals per 50ml. Though consumers should note that this does not include tonics – which vary considerably in their calorie content.

Tanqueray 0.0% will retail for around £16 (US$22) per 700ml bottle and is available for purchase from Waitrose, Waitrose, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s in March. All other national supermarkets will stock the drink in April.

Last year, Gordon’s launched an alcohol-free ‘spirit’ of its own – using the same botanicals as in its London Dry Gin.
