Cullen and Bodegas Emina commit to IWCA
The International Wineries for Climate Action group has welcomed two new applicant members, Cullen Wines and Bodega Emina.
The wineries have committed to the IWCA’s action plant to begin reducing their carbon emissions. All members have to produce at least 20% of their own power through renewable energy, reduce 25% of their carbon emissions per unit of wine produced and complete an annual greenhouse gas audit verified by a third-party auditor.
Located in Margaret River, Cullen Wines has already been working biodynamically for over 20 years and has been certified carbon neutral since 2007 and carbon positive since 2019.
Bodega Emina in Ribera del Duero, part of the Matarromera Group, is already well-advanced in the field of eco-sustainable production, producing much of its own energy through solar panels and biomass furnaces as well as treating its waste water.
The two wineries joined their first IWCA meeting earlier this month, where co-founder Miguel Torres presented findings from the Familia Torres experiments with biomass boilers in combination with absorption chillers which has reduced the winery’s gas consumption by 95%, electricity by 10% and prevented the emission of 1,300 tons of CO2 per year.
The IWCA Group was founded in 2019 by Familia Torres and Jackson Family Wines and currently has 10 winery members from six countries.
