Teen charged with murder of restaurateur

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of Brighton-based restaurateur Susan Addis.

Addis, 69, was the director of the company that operated Brighton-based Italian restaurants Donatello’s and Pinocchio.

In a statement Sussex Police said that a 17-year-old boy, believed to be known to Addis, has been charged with murder after a woman was found at an address in the Withdean area of Brighton on 7 January.

The boy is due to appear in court today. Police said that Addis was found dead with stab injuries, with a full postmortem due to be conducted today.

Pinocchio pizzeria opened in 1987 and lays claim to being Brighton’s oldest Italian restaurant, championing set two- and three-course meals and outdoor dining. Donatello’s later opened in 1991 and employs some 100 members of staff.

According to The Argus, Addis has three sons – Leo, Stefano, and Mikele – who all work for the family business.

As well as her success in the restaurant industry, local media reports that Addis was also an active charity fundraiser and a long-time supporter and sponsor of football club Brighton and Hove Albion. Players wore black armbands during their FA Cup match this weekend in memory of Addis.

Kemptown and Peacehaven MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle told the Worthing Herald: “Sue was a stalwart of Brighton and Hove, she wasn’t only the owner of the iconic Donatello’s but was passionate about her charity and community work. Her passing comes as a huge shock to us all and although she will be dearly missed her legacy will remain in all she gave to the community.”

A message on the Donatello’s Facebook page reads: “We appreciate all the recent messages of condolence and support. The Addis family ask that you please respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
