Winter warmers: London’s best festive pop-ups

With London out of lockdown, a plethora of festive fixtures have popped up around the capital to get you in the Christmas mood, from 100 Wardour’s Alpine Lodge to the igloos at Somerset House.

Alpine Lodge with Taittinger at 100 Wardour St

Ski season may be on hold until next year, but for anyone who looks forward to the drinks afterwards more than the slopes themselves, you’re in luck. The Alpine Lodge has just been unveiled at 100 Wardour St in Soho, set up in collaboration with Taittinger for all of your après-ski needs.

Priced at £12 a pop, the Taittinger festive-themed cocktails on offer – including the Cabin Fever made with Hennessy Cognac, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, Campari, raspberry, Taittinger Brut,; and the Snow What, which blends St George Spiced Pear, Roots Rakomelo, walnut bitters, pear and almond purée, orgeat and Taittinger Brut – are sure to warm your cockles this winter.

Igloos at Somerset House

Somerset house will not be keeping up the ice skating tradition this year, but is instead offering up an intimate fine dining experience in one of its winter domes that boast a view of both house and gardens.

With bookings available for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, a bubble of up to six can enjoy a meal created by a team of award-winning chefs including an intriguing whipped popcorn cheesecake, as well as more hearty dishes like pork belly with colcannon, glazed whole winter carrots and cider gravy or cauliflower ragout with caramelised romanesco, toasted seed crumble, sage oil and wild mushroom broth as a tasty vegan option.

Bala Baya Discarded Umbrella Winter Garden

Tel Aviv-inspired Southwark restaurant Bala Baya has come up with a fresh take on the classic winter pop-up with its Discarded Umbrella Winter Garden, created with a canopy of over 200 brightly-coloured brollies found on the TFL underground.

Created in partnership with Discarded Spirits Co and Bala Baya’s neighbour restaurant Marcellaio, this winter wonderland will feature an Israeli-inspired menu and cocktails with a twist, like the Banana Old Fashioned (£10) – a blend of Discarded Banana Peel Rum and real banana peels, with sugar syrup and three dashes of chocolate bitters.

Discarded Spirits Co is seeking new ways to reuse materials that would otherwise go to waste, and in collaboration with Bala Baya is offering £1 off each cocktail with every discarded umbrella guests bring along, so get hunting!

The Macallan Manor House at Rosewood London

Looking for a change of scenery but wanting to stay close to home? Get transported to the Scottish Highlands this Christmas at The Macallan Manor House at the Rosewood London. In partnership with renowned whiskey brand The Macallan, the Rosewood has dressed up its terrace with beautiful pine trees, blue heather and purple thistles. With impressive attention to detail, the copper light fixtures hanging from the ceiling are a subtle nod to the copper stills used in whiskey-making, for a truly immersive experience.

Crate Brewery

On to something a little more cheap and cheerful, as the canalside Crate Brewery & Pizzeria in Hackney Wick is inviting guests to snuggle up with a refreshing beer in its large outdoor space. Usually bursting with bearded hipsters over the summer months, the outdoor space has been kitted out with fire pits to keep warm and wooden shacks to shelter from the wind, so you can enjoy pizza and a pint freshly made right inside.

Boathouse Christmas Cinema Supperclub

One for the film-buffs, this three-way collaboration between the Boathouse London, atHOME and Moët & Chandon brings an enchanting Christmas themed dining and film experience. This merry voyage comes with a three-course meal cooked up by Mother Supper, followed by a festive film to be enjoyed for up to six people in a bubble. Each ticket includes one glass of Moët Champagne on arrival, a three-course meal and a mixologist on hand to whip up a Christmas cocktail invented on the spot.

The Prince, West Brompton

Close your eyes and imagine a covered woodland garden decked out with beautiful flowers and outdoor heaters, and the option of food from four different restaurants and drinks from three bars. This is exactly what The Prince in West Brompton is offering up this winter. Complete with a retractable roof, London’s largest pub garden is the perfect place to spend a chilly winter evening over Christmas. For those who love to have options and try new things, choose between Filth&Co burgers, Jack’s Sprat fish dishes and Utter Waffle sweet or savoury bites.

Nordic Experience Brunch at Vauxhall Food and Beer Garden

Vauxhall Food and Beer Garden is catering to the early morning crowd this winter with its Nordic Experience Brunch pop-up. Decked out with a Nordic cabin made with Scandinavian materials and enchanting northern light projections, it won’t be one to miss with winter-themed cuisine and cocktails. A winter wonderland in the heart of London, this Christmassy festive treat will only be open for the next two weekends, so book now.
