Pink Prosecco goes on shelf at Aldi
Aldi is becoming the first UK supermarket to sell a pink Prosecco, following the Italian government giving the pink fizz the go-ahead in May.
The new Prosecco Rosé DOC, which db reported back in September, will go on shelf from 2 November and be available in two formats – a 750ml bottle (RRP: £6.49) as well as 250ml mini bottle (RRP: £2.29).
Julie Ashford, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said the discounter was “over the moon” to be the first to provide customers with the first bottles of Prosecco Rosé DOC.
“Prosecco is one of our best sellers and shoppers can’t seem to get enough of pink wines so far this year, so a Prosecco that’s pink is sure to get the nation popping bottles,” she said. “It’s been a pleasure to work with the Italian suppliers on creating such an exciting new product, and we can’t wait for our customers to try this tipple.”
In September Josh Heley said that rosé had been “flying off the shelves” over the lst six months, with sales up 40% vs. the same period in 2019.
Although many Prosecco producers already produce sparking Italian rosé (or rosato) wines, before the changes were introduced in May they have were not able to market or label these winesas Prosecco. The new pink Prosecco will adhere to the strict regulations laid down by the Consorzio, including being made from Glera grapes grown exclusively from nine provinces in the north east of Italy, along with up to 15% of Pinot Nero (Noir). The fizz needs to spend at least 60 days in a pressurised tank during the second fermentation to stabilise the colour, and styles from Brut Nature to Extra Dry are permitted.
