Super Tuscans top September performances
Italian and Champagne labels topped the five best-performing wines in September, as the two regions continue to pull ahead in the secondary market this year.
Liv-ex reported that vintages of Sassicaia, Solaia and Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne ruled the roost in the secondary market in September.
Sassicaia’s 2007 was the top-performer, its average case price rising 18% between August and September to £2,125, followed by Solaia’s 2011, up 12% to £1,806 and Taittinger’s 2004 Comtes up 10.2% to £1,025.
Solaia’s 2013 and 2015 vintages made up the rest of the top five, rising 10.1% and 9.4% respectively.
The latest vintages of Solaia (the 2017) and Comtes (2008) were both released recently which often sparks an uptick in trade for back vintages.
Both Italy and Champagne have been motoring this year, as they have for the past couple of years in fact.
Within the Fine Wine 1000 index, the Italy 100 is up 2.39% month-on-month, 4.6% on the year-to-date and 4.2% over one year.
The Champagne 50, likewise, is up 2% month-on-month, 6.8% on the year-to-date and 6.5% over one year.
These are by far the best YTD and one year performances among the sub-indices. The next best one year performance is the Bordeaux Legends 500 which has risen a mere 0.2%.
And the five-year overview for the two indices is strong too, up 43.4% for the Italian index and 53.8% for Champagne, both still trail the Burgundy 150 which is up 80% in those five years but that index has also seen an 8.3% slump over the last year.
