Poundland launches beer, wine and spirits

UK discount retailer Poundland is hoping to cash in on the remarkable rise in supermarket alcohol sales this year by selling its own beer wine and spirits.

The chain is using selected branches to trial selling household brands of wines, gins, rums, vodkas, ready-mixed drinks, lagers, ciders and real ales.

But if you were hoping to get a tinned G&T for just a pound, you’d be disappointed.

Prices start at £1.50 for a 250ml can of Gordons & Tonic, while a 35cl Gordon’s pink gin costs £10. Most wines, which include Echo Falls Rosé, i Heart Pinot Grigio, and Ardizi Prosecco, cost between £5 and £6.50.

The company said pricing for the trial is in line with its “every day low price” USP. Those in the trial will continue to sell a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks.

Poundland launched the trial earlier this month in Cannock, Stoke Festival Retail Park and Stockport, as the retailer tests which products should be part of a wider rollout next year.

Trading director Tim Bettley said: “We’ve been steadily expanding the ranges we offer customers and moving into beers, wines and spirits is the next logical step.

“We’re already the go-to destination for our customers for groceries, health and beauty and household products, as well as PEP&CO clothing and homeware, so it makes sense to give them the convenience of adding their drink of choice to their shopping basket.”
