DOC delle Venezie gains protection from European Commission
DOC delle Venezie, one of Italy’s best-known wine designations, has been registered on eAmbrosia, the database of geographical indications and protected names in the EU for food and drink.
Organic ripe Pinot Gris grapes on the vine ready for harvest during autumn in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada.
The denomination will be reserved for the combination of different grape varieties to make still and sparkling wines in demarcated areas within the Autonomous Province of Trento, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto.
The European Commission decided that the DOC had all the necessary credentials to be protected and become part of the European register of designations of origin PDO and PGI, also will also be protected in bilateral agreements with other countries.
Albino Armani, president of the Delle Venezie consortium, said lobbying for the registration is “an unprecedented and ambitious project” which will improve the northern Italian region’s reputation for the production of Pinot Grigio.
It is hoped the new registration will “increase the value of our wine supply chain, one of the driving forces of the regional and national economy” Maurizio Urizio, deputy central director of agriculture in Friuli Venezia Giulia, said,
Urizio called the designation a “broad, intelligently created aggregation that has led and that, now more than ever, will lead to further improvements for the entire Pinot Grigio system in our area, which will be in a position to assert itself decisively on international markets”.
