Irish spirits depressed

The Irish spirits market has suffered widespread decline since massive duty hikes in the 2002 budget

THE TOTAL SPIRITS market in Ireland stands at around 2.3 million cases which places Ireland in 45th place in the world ranking of spirits countries.  Vodka and whisky/whiskey are the leading categories accounting for almost two-thirds of total spirits consumption between them.

The other main categories are liqueurs, brandy, rum, gin and flavoured alcoholic beverages. Vodka, liqueurs and flavoured alcoholic beverages are the only major categories to have shown net growth since 1999, although, since 2002, volume has declined for all three categories.

The decline for all major categories since 2002 is attributable to a massive hike in excise duty in that year’s budget.
