Bristol to get taste of ‘Spain’s answer to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc’
Join Sarah Jane Evans MW for a masterclass on Spain’s leading white wine region, Rueda, featuring young, fresh styles of Verdejo right the way through to barrel-fermented and old vine examples.
The masterclass will take place on Tuesday 17 September from 3 to 5pm at the Mercure Bristol Holland House.
Presented by Sarah Jane Evans MW, it will explore why the region in north west Spain is gaining in popularity, with exports rising by 41.7% to over a million bottles in 2017.
The wines, which have been described by the drinks business’ editor-in-chief, Patrick Schmitt MW, as “Spain’s answer to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc”, are typically made from Verdejo, though some Sauvignon is also made.
Produced in various styles, including fresh and aromatic, barrel-fermented and sur lie, masterclass attendees will have the chance to try them all.
At the last masterclass, held in London, guests were also treated to a Dorado at the end of the masterclass, which is a rare, historic, oxidative, dry fortified wine that was once widely-produced in Rueda, and is now making a come-back.
Rueda comprises 72 municipalities, located in the Community of Castile and León, with around 99% of its production being white wines, 87% of which are made from Verdejo. It is known for its pebble stone soils and altitude, which ranges from around 600 to 950 metres above sea level. The river Duero runs through the region from east to west.
