Welsh brewery offers beer for bilberries
A Welsh brewery is offering beer for every 100 grams of bilberries members of the public can forage from the local moorlands.
Hafod Brewery in Flintshire has made small batches of a seasonal ‘Bilberry Brew’ for a number of years and normally uses 10kg of the fruit which is enough to make 2,500 litres of the beer, equivalent to 15 barrels and 1,700 bottles.
Normally the brewery works with rangers from the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but owner Martin Godfrey (pictured) told the Daily Post he wanted to “step up production” and so is calling on local walkers to help.
The brewery has said that every 100 grams of foraged bilberries brought in will earn the picker a bottle from this year’s batch of Bilberry Brew.
Godfrey said: “We like the idea of using locally-sourced ingredients.
“People like a beer that comes with a story and for those that collect the bilberries they’ll know they had a part in the process.”
