Plymouth Gin launches special edition gin made from 170-year-old recipe

Plymouth Gin has launched ‘Mr King’s 1842 Recipe,’ the first craft gin in a new series designed by the brand to celebrate ‘the spirit of exploration’.

With the aim of taking gin back to its roots, Mr King’s 1842 is made using a recipe found within the vaults at Plymouth Black Friars distillery.

Plymouth’s master distiller, Sean Harrison, has utilised his 20 years’ experience to recreate the recipe using only two ingredients: orris root and hand-picked juniper from a single harvest day in the mountains of Frontignano in Italy.

Harrison said: “Mr King’s 1842 Recipe is a truly one-off craft gin that we will never be able to recreate again. Even if we were to visit the same Italian hillside next year, the climate and harvest conditions would affect the juniper resulting in a different taste profile.

“At a time when other brands are using many different botanicals throughout the distillation process, Mr King’s 1842 Recipe focuses on just two and the result is something very special. It’s an honour to bring Mr King’s gin into the 21st century.”

Priced at £45.50, the special edition gin is limited to 2,000 cases.
