Peroni latest to release 0.0% alcohol-free beer
Peroni Nastro Azzurro has launched its first alcohol-free beer, Peroni Libera 0.0%, which will be available at Tesco stores across the UK from this month.
Peroni Libera 0.0% is first brewed with the same Nostrano dell’Isola maize unique to Peroni Nastro Azzurro, while a dedicated yeast strain helps to impart its citrusy aromas and hoppy characteristics.
It then undergoes a “special decoction” process, allowing the liquid to retain its flavour while removing its alcohol content.
Simone Caporale, former bartender at the Artesian at The Langham in London, and Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s “Master of Mixology”, said: “We’ve seen a change in consumers drinking habits in the industry, with the rise of mindfulness and wellbeing people are more regularly considering low- and no-alcohol drinks alternatives and currently there isn’t a premium, great tasting beer out there for them to enjoy.”
The trend for low- and no-alcohol alternatives chimes with a numbers of studies that have tracked the general decline of alcohol consumption among young people.
In a study published in the journal BMC Public Health this year, the number of young people in the UK choosing to not drink has risen to almost a third, with abstinence becoming increasingly “mainstream”.
Of the 10,000 participants aged 16-24 surveyed, 29% regarded themselves as non drinkers, up from 18% in 2005. In 2005 two in five young people (43%) admitted drinking above the recommended limits, but this fell to just 28% 10 years later.
Peroni Libera 0.0% will be available at Tesco nationwide from this month, priced at £5.00 for 4x 330ml bottle, and will also be rolled out across the on-trade at select accounts.
