Kanonkop sets new record at Cape Winemakers Guild Auction
The 34th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction was held in Stellenbosch over the weekend, making R 10 million in total and with a new record set for a red wine.

In total the sale realised R 10.5m (£576,650) and with an average case price of R 5,265 and a bottle price of R 878 which exceeded last year’s results.
The very first lot, a six-bottle case of Kanonkop’s 2015 ‘Paul Sauer’, set a new record when it sold for R 22,500 (£1,222).
The wine made the news a few weeks ago when it was awarded 100-points in Tim Atkin MW’s most recent South African report.
Other top-selling reds (and all wines are bottled and labelled specially for the sale) included: Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2016, Rijk’s Pinotage 2015, Rust en Vrede Auction Estate 2015, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Windansea Pinot Noir 2017 and Hartenberg Auction Shiraz 2015.
For the white wines, Mullineux’s ‘The Gris’ Semillon – Old Vines 2017, Ataraxia Under the Gavel Chardonnay 2017, Paul Cluver The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2017 and Jordan Chardonnay 2017 were all leading lots.
There was also strong bidding for the two Méthode Cap Classique wines: Graham Beck’s 2009 Cuvée105 ‘MGA’ Zero Dosage and Silverthorn Wines Big Dog IV 2013.
In total 48 wines in 2,012 six-packs were offered, 31 red, 14 white, two MCC and one fortified.
Bidders were predominantly local, with hospitality buyers from the Tsogo Sun hotel group and Marble Restaurant buying just over R 2m worth of wine between them, however there were also bids from the UK, hong Kong, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, the US, Namibia, the Czech Republic, France and Luxembourg.
“We are very happy with the results of the 2018 auction. The strict selection process by our members and our focus on smaller volumes of premium quality wines certainly paid off when considering the increased average price per bottle. Overall the auction offered exceptional value across the board which was good news for the large contingent of private buyers,” says Boela Gerber, Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
