China’s most popular by the glass wine is from Australia
The most popular red wine by the glass poured on-premise at hotels and restaurants in China’s capital Beijing is produced by Australia’s De Bortoli Wines, a survey by global wine analytics experts MiBD Markets has found.
The survey recorded 160 venues in Beijing during 2017 and found that the Aussie wine outranked 12,700 wines to become the top red wine brand by the glass under RMB 100 (US$15), ahead of Jacob’s Creek, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Penfolds.
Victor De Bortoli, third generation and executive director at De Bortoli Wines, cites the country’s booming demand from young, middle class Chinese choosing affordable, quality wine over beer and spirits to enjoy with dinner as the key reason for his wine’s success in the on-premise sector.
“We have seen phenomenal growth over the past two years and we have been able to participate in it thanks to the work we have done over the last decade with our long time distribution partner in China, Torres Wines, to introduce thousands of hoteliers and restaurateurs to wine that truly over delivers,” he commented.
Other than De Bortoli Wines, other brands that made on to the top 10 list are Jacob’s Creek, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Badet Clement & Co, Bisquert, Bodegas Emilio Moro, Penfolds, Tua Rita, Vistamar and 1421, according to the survey.
