Pub declares ‘INNdependence’ from UK

A Somerset pub has announced its intention to split from the UK and become an “INNdependent RePUBlic” – but only for the weekend.

The owners of the Cross Keys Inn at Lydford-on-Fosse near Yeovil have apparently informed the Prime Minister of their intention to secede from Friday 7 September to Sunday 9 September and become the RePUBlic of Cross Keys (R.O.C.K.)

The weekend’s independence is to mark the fifth anniversary of the current owners tenure and the website promises, “a lighthearted weekend of silly entertainments, great music, food and drink.”

The provisional programme of events includes games of skittles and tug-o-war, live music, beer, wine and gin tastings and theatricals in the garden.

‘Passports’ will be issued at the door for either the day or the whole weekend and funds raised through the sale of t-shirts made for the occasion will go to St Margaret’s Hospice.

Speaking to the Morning Advertiser, landlord David Grindley said that local MP David Warburton had agreed to be at the pub on Sunday afternoon, “to accept our surrender back into the UK”.
