HK buyers swoop on Masseto library stocks
Library stocks consigned from the cellars of Super Tuscan Masseto were scooped up by Hong Kong buyers at Christie’s sale last weekend.
Taking place on 26 May, the sale included a collection of “unique” lots of Masseto ranging from older vintages spanning 1995-2009 in a variety of formats, to a small parcel of its latest 2015 vintage which will become physical this autumn.
Nineteen library lots were offered in all, realising €109,791 in total and including wines bottled in magnum, double magnum, and imperials.
Eight lots of the 2015 were offered, making €63,177 overall, the equivalent of €1,036 a bottle.
The 2015s were offered in a mix of bottle, magnum, double magnum, imperial and even Nebuchadnezzar (one of only 10 bottles of this format that were packaged thus).
Each lot of 2015 will be presented in a wooden case with a plaque denoting it was bought at the Hong Kong sale.
Tim Tiptree, director and senior specialist at Christie’s Wine, said: ‘‘Christie’s are delighted with the strong results for the lots direct from Masseto with 100% of the lots offered selling and particularly the ‘Premier Preview Masseto 2015’ allowing the lucky buyers to secure this fantastic vintage before general release for sale in the autumn.
Six bottles of Masseto 2015 were sold for HK$49,000 and a rare Nebuchadnezzar for HK$196,000. We sincerely thank the team at Masseto for the partnership for this special auction.”
