Heavy metal band Metallica to launch whiskey

American heavy metal band Metallica is planning to launch a whiskey brand made at its own distillery according to the former master distiller of Maker’s Mark Bourbon.

As reported by WhiskyCast, Dave Pickerell, former master distiller of Maker’s Mark and currently at the helm of WhistlePig, is to partner with the band on the project.

According to Pickerell, Metallica is considering three locations as a base for the venture: San Francisco, Louisville and Nashville, the home of the band, Bourbon and music respectively.

“I”m voting for San Fransisco and the Bay Area, if nothing falls apart,” Pickerell told WhiskyCast.

Danny Wimmer, producer of the Bourbon & Beyond whiskey and music festival, told WhiskyCast that the move will benefit both the music and whiskey industries.

“We’re excited that a band at their level can really turn a fringe drinker into a full-time whiskey drinker. With their platform, they have a huge reach. I think it’s going to be exciting for the whiskey business,” he said.

This isn’t Metallica’s first foray into the drinks industry as the band has previously teamed up with Budweiser to launch a limited edition branded beer.

Over the years a number of rock and heavy metal bands have released their own drinks brands, including Iron Maiden, Motorhead, ACDC, The Rolling Stones, Tool, and Kiss.

Metallica was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield.

The band’s fast tempos and long instrumentals made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal alongside Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer.

My word…does anyone smell the whiff hypocrisy? The band has a lead singer who went into rehab and has been sober for 15 years, but he’s saying drink up to others? Weird.

    1. Jim says:

Exactly this. Being in recovery myself this is straight up weird as hell. Wow, just wow. Going to try to make even more money by encouraging the exact thing that almost killed him, that’s literally beyond my scope of rationalization, I just…? The greed, the obscenity of this hypocrisy. Sick.

If they were simply buying whiskey and putting their name on it I’d be rather unimpressed. They’re not. They’ve partnered with one of the top distillers in the United States to build a proper distillery that will produce and sell quality spirit. As a professional whiskey distiller myself that’s been in the industry for over 27 years, I applaud them. Everyone is trying to get into the whiskey business because it’s a good business. These guys have the resources and from what I’ve seen, the dedication to artistry and quality to make this a really cool venture. I for one, can’t wait to taste the result.
