This US winery is making a Sauvignon Blanc wine laced with cannabis

Sonoma in California’s wine country is known for producing easy-drinking Sauvignon Blancs with fragrant green notes.

But now, the varietal is about to get a lot greener as one vineyard is working on a complex wine which swaps out alcohol for cannabis.

Rebel Coast Winery, launched in 2013 by Kate Seiberlich, Doug Burkett, and Chip Forsythe, is producing a wine that has has the alcoholic content removed, while at the same time has been infused with THC, the psychoactive substance present in cannabis.

The wine is best paired with “ignoring your parent’s advice”, according to the company’s website.

It will be first cannabis-infused wine of its kind, made in accordance with California’s cannabis production laws, according to the coastal vinter.

The as yet unnamed wine, which is still in the patent-pending stage, is available to pre-order now. Rebel Coast hopes to begin shipping its herbaceous libation in 2018.

“Winemakers have been making infused wine for years,” Rebel Coast co-founder Howe told New Cannabis Ventures, “but no one developed a reliable method to remove the alcohol and infuse it with cannabis’ active ingredients in a way that wasn’t impacting the quality of the wine, so it appealed to both wine and cannabis aficionados,”

The Sauvignon will be made by fermenting the Sonoma crops as normal, but before bottling, the alcohol will be removed and instead replaced with 16 milligrams of organic tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC.

The curious blend also incorporates essential fragrant oils such as terpenes, which give the wine a more pronounced cannabis-style aroma.

Customers can pre-order the wine for $59.99 (£44.94). Rebel coast also plans to produce a rosé and spark wine blend, which we expect will have a bright profile with some heady grass notes.
