Berkmann expands North American portfolio

UK wine merchant Berkmann Wine Cellars has announced it has expanded its North American portfolio, becoming the exclusive agent for three wineries: two Californian and one Canadian.

Canada’s Okanagan Valley

Berkmann will be the exclusive UK agent and distributor of Californian producers Silverado Vineyards and Buena Vista Winery and Canada’s Quail’s Gate with immediate effect.

The new producers join Berkmann’s existing range of Californian producers which include: Joseph Phelps, Antica, Williams Selyem, Radio-Coteau, Cobb, Pisoni, Saintsbury, Sebastiani, Joel Gott and Christian Moueix and Quail’s Gate becomes the company’s first Canadian wine.

The UK fine wine market is seeing a growing interest in American – principally Californian – fine wines and there is a steady momentum behind Canadian wines too as increasingly positive reviews create greater curiosity about this relatively unknown industry.

Alex Hunt MW, purchasing director at Berkmann Wine Cellars, commented: “We’ve been passionate advocates of North America for some time so the opportunity to add two Californian icons to our portfolio was an easy decision. Silverado Vineyards’ commitment to producing estate wines which showcase the best of the Napa Valley dovetails perfectly with our ethos of working with family-owned wineries that demonstrate a true sense of place.

“The Buena Vista Winery is an iconic piece of California’s vinous history and under the stewardship of the Boisset family they are now delivering high quality wines which live up to the pedigree of the property.”

He added: ”Canada’s Okanagan Valley is producing some fantastic wines and we have been searching determinedly for the right winery to help us introduce this region to our customers. In Quails’ Gate, we have found the ideal partner – family-owned and with a focus on producing high-quality wines that still offer great value for money. Their Pinot Noir is a particular joy and adds another unique expression of this grape variety to our growing range.”
