Star Wars’ George Lucas buys Provence estate

George Lucas’ Skywalker Vineyards has acquired a wine estate in Provence, adding to a growing portfolio which already includes vineyards in California’s Marin County and an estate in Italy.

Skywalker Vineyards acquired Château Margüi, an estate winery in the southwestern Bessillon mountain range, in April.

Announcing its acquisition, Skywalker said the estate, which dates back to Roman times, “embodies the Skywalker philosophy of land stewardship and, respect for terroir”.

The estate comprises 40 acres of vineyards and a 7-acre olive grove and 200 acres of forest, set around an 18th century chateau.

Certified organic, the AOP Coteaux Varois en Provence vineyard is planted with varieties including Syrah, Cabernet, Vermentino, Cinsault, Grenache and Sangiovese.

The Provencal estate joins Skywalker Vineyards’s California operation, in Nicasio, and Il Convento in Umbria, Italy, which the company acquired in 2007.

“We are excited to include Château Margüi among our exclusive wine properties. It is the perfect complement to our magnificent Italian Estate and the scenic Skywalker Vineyards in California.” – Angelo Garcia, President of Skywalker Properties, and Lucas Real Estate Holdings

From this summer, Skywalker Vineyards will import Château Margüi’s 2016 Perle de Margüi Rosé and 2015 L’Or des Pierres oak-aged Vin Blanc.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
