GIN HAS lost its place in the great British shopping basket

GIN HAS lost its place in the great British shopping basket, being replaced, horror or horrors, by vodka.  According to the Office of National Statistics, the stalwart of British drinkers and ruin of many mothers is no longer fashionable and has been excluded from its annual review of the 650-strong goods and services that are used to underpin the consumer price index (CPI) – the barometer and main measure for inflation in the UK.

The list is reviewed once a year, and this year gin has been unceremoniously dumped and replaced with vodka, the fastest growing drink in the spirits sector, and dominant drink in bars across the nation.

However, gin is not alone. Out too are cheese slices, frozen turkey, the local newspaper and rather oddly mini-disc players.  Apparently, these are all no longer considered the staple components of British living. Instead, alongside vodka, we are more likely to be purchasing men’s football boots, a basic manicure, a shower unit and regional cheese.

What a funny old world it is.
