Having previously published the 15 most expensive cities for a round of drinks, we now bring you the cheapest 15 places to imbibe – taking in Europe, South America and the subcontinent.

Honest Coffee’s ranking of the cheapest cities for a round of drinks shows that South Africa, India and South America are the best places for travellers on a tight budget

Over the following pages is a ranking of the world’s major cities according to the cost of a round of drinks, incorporating a pint of beer, a cup of coffee, a glass of coke and a bottle of water.

The research – conducted by ethical coffee supplier Honest Coffees – ranked 30 of “the world’s most prestigious cities” according to the price of drinks in bars, pubs, restaurants and cafés, and last week we featured the top 15 from this list.

This week’s cheapest cities for a round of drinks shows that South Africa, India and South America are the best places for travellers on a tight budget, with, notably, a round of drinks in a cosmopolitan city such as Cape Town coming in a less than £5 for all four beverages.

India, too, is another sensible option for thrifty holidaymakers, with New Delhi and Mumbai both offering cheap drinks, while the low-value of the pound makes South and Central America attractive for travellers, with drinks prices in Rio de Janeiro, Lima and Mexico City all significantly lower than London.

As we pointed out last week, in our list of the 15 most expensive cities for a round of drinks, although a city such as London is commonly perceived as being one of the priciest places to have a drink, readers might be surprised to learn that visitors to Paris will part with an average of 40% more than they would pay in London for a beer, coffee, bottle of water and a coke.

However, when it comes to just alcoholic refreshment, it’s Dubai that tops the list, with a pint of beer costing on average as much as £8.78, more than four times the fee charged in Cape Town.

And as for hot drinks, the most expensive place to enjoy a coffee is Hong Kong, where a cup will cost you £3.81, almost three times the charge in Rio – the cheapest “prestigious city” for a coffee.
