Christie’s sets new records at NYC sale
Auction house Christie’s has said it set new records for Jacques Selosse, Domaine Leroy and Madeira at its recent two-day sale in New York.
In total the sale realised US$5.3 million, over $2.5m coming from the sale of wines belonging to collector Staffan Hansson.
In this first part of the sale, two records were set for six bottles of Jacques Selosse, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs 1990, which made $15,925 and a 12 bottle case of Domaine Leroy’s 1996 Corton Charlemagne, which realised $34,300.
The second day of the sale, featuring wines from the Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant, saw noticeably high bidding for some of the old and rare Madeira being sold.
In the end, new benchmark prices were set for one bottle of Companhia Vinicola da Madeira, Terrantez 1795 which went for $11,638 and another single bottle of 1795, this time a Barbeito, Terrantez Garrafeira Particular, which made $18,375.
Other top-selling lots from this portion of the sale included: a Jeroboam of 1966 La Tâche from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, magnums of 1993 Musigny Vieilles Vignes from de Vogüé, a case of 1961 Mouton Rothschild and a Lalique decanter of 55-Year-Old The Macallan.
Noah May, head of sales, Wine Department, said: “We are delighted to conclude two days of successful sales in the New York live auctions. The curated selection inspired competitive bidding for wine and exceptional spirits alike. We are particularly thrilled to see the rare collection of Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant perform remarkably well today in addition to historic Madeira prices, setting two new world auction records. We look forward to the next sweep of Christie’s International Wine Department’s sales.”
